Most people budget carefully for tuition and then underestimate everything that happens in the first few weeks after landing. The early period tends to be the most expensive stretch of the whole year, because you're paying for setup costs on top of ordinary living expenses.
Upfront housing costs
Many rental markets abroad require a deposit plus the first month's rent upfront, sometimes both at once. In some cities, agency fees add another cost on top. Budget for this as a lump sum you need available on arrival, not something you'll pay gradually.
Setting up a bank account and phone plan
Opening a local bank account can take longer than expected, and some services (phone plans, certain purchases) are easier with one. In the interim, factor in international transaction fees on your home account, and the cost of a local SIM or short-term data plan.
Furnishing an empty room
Unless your accommodation is furnished, the basics — bedding, kitchenware, basic furniture — add up quickly. Second-hand marketplaces and student groups in your new city are usually the cheapest way to fill these gaps rather than buying everything new.
The transport learning curve
Figuring out the cheapest way to get around — monthly transit passes, student discounts, cycling — takes a week or two of paying full price before you learn the system. Budget slightly more for transport in month one than you expect to spend afterward.
A buffer for the unexpected
Something in the first three months almost always costs more than planned — a delayed reimbursement, a medical visit, a document you didn't realise you'd need printed and translated. A buffer of a few hundred dollars/euros set aside specifically for surprises will save you stress later.
